I Prefer to Use My Cell Phone
As My Only Telephone Service
The "greatest generation"
and even most "baby boomers" grew up with traditional
landline phone service and would feel something was amiss without
it. But younger phone users got their first personal phone as
a cell phone in high school or college and have used it exclusively
all through school. So why do they want to put one of those old
fashioned telephone sets in their home and pay extra for it?
That Old Fashioned Service Still
Has Value
Traditional analog telephone service, often called a "landline",
directly connects you to the telephone company. For nearly 100
years, it was the ONLY telephone service available to most people.
Landline service is designed to be very reliable
and to be available in most emergency situations. You may not
know it but the telephone company has battery and generator backup
power available to keep your line powered even when all the power
lines are down.
Old fashioned non-electronic phones use
telephone line power to operate and will almost always deliver
a dial tone. Newer models, especially the multi-handset wireless
phones have power adaptors and won't work when the power goes
out. You can get a battery backup, like the type used for computers,
to make sure your phone always has power.
Landlines are also useful in rural areas
to provide a connection for dial-up Internet service. Broadband
DSL service, where available, shares your landline wires so you
generally have to order at least local phone service to get DSL
on a telephone line. Some satellite TV receivers and security
alarms also need a landline to connect to their service providers.
One thing you need to know is that landlines
are almost exclusively owned by the local telephone companies,
so you'll have to contact the one in your town if you want this
service.
That's Nice, But I Still Want
To Use My Cell Phone
It's an option that more and more people are choosing these days.
Cell phone service is highly reliable and what's more, it's mobile.
With a cell phone, your friends, family and business contacts
can always reach you. No missed calls because you have two phone
numbers.
With a cell phone and Cable
Broadband for your desktop computer or cellular
broadband for your laptop computer, there's really not much
that you need an extra landline for. If you start to miss it,
you can always get one installed or go with VoIP
broadband phone that shares your Cable connection.
